Cutting the post holes in the deck Mark the holes central to the width of the seat, and ensure the holes do not span more than 1500mm (5ft). Use the end of a post as a marking template. Cut the holes out using a jig saw, drilling a 10mm (3/8″) hole in one corner first, to enable the jigsaw to get started.
Build bench to fit existing deck space or use as barrier at side of low deck. Start by cutting frame from 2x4s. With circular saw, cut two long boards for frame sides and six cross pieces.

Next attach the front of your table using deck screws into the cross pieces, and using another scrap of 2×6 attach the table front to the bench front from the inside. Place a 23 7/8″ piece across the back, and attach by drilling screws down into the cross pieces. Repeat, alternating 2×4 and 2×6 pieces.
Built-in deck benches often are used to define the perimeters of a deck. On low decks, deck benches can be plain seats with no backs. However, if the edge of your decking (walking surface) is more than 30 inches above grade, then your built-in bench has the building code obligation to act as a fixed railing system, too.

Often a low deck with no railing needs something to give it a degree of character - to help make it look less like just a flat platform.

If your deck is low enough not to require a railing, build a bench around the perimeter to provide seating and a sense of enclosure. You can even use leftover deck boards for the seat.
To make this deck more party friendly, we added a built-in corner bench made from treated lumber, with an angled back that attaches to the railing on the deck. When building deck seating, make the seat 16”-18” high by 15″-18″ deep with a 15° to 20° slant on the back.

Set up a planting area by adding an outdoor-resilient potting bench that includes a shelf system and a der or two to store gardening supplies, such as plant tags, seed packets, and string. Deck seat bench After you have installed the two supports to the deck framing, attach the 2×4 (or 2×6) wooden boards with 3” decking screws. As you can see in the image, the slats should overhang about 2”, on both sides of the bench. If you want to add a dramatic look to your bench, round the edges with a router and 1/4” bit.

To frame an extension that rises one step from the existing deck, lay out the post locations and cut the posts so the joists rest on the surface of the old deck. Build the frame and toenail it to the old deck. Design your extension to use 2x6s, if possible. That way you'll have about a 7-inch step to the new deck.
