While most residential construction uses 2x8 joists with 16 inch spacing, there are many other factors you need to consider when determining the proper joist span length. Below is a table giving the minimum size floor joists needed for 16″ and 24″ on center (o.c.) spacing when using #2 lumber with 10 pounds per square foot of dead load and 40 pounds of live load. You can always use bigger lumber, closer spacing, or a smaller span; just don’t go smaller, further apart, or a longer span.
A structure with a 10 foot (3.05 m) length, and joists set 12 inches (304.8 mm), apart would require using a floor joist size of 2 x 8 (50.8 x 203 mm). If the joist spacing will be 16 inches (406.4 mm), a joist size of 2 x 8 should be used, even if the length is only 8 feet (2.44 m).
Since the example house we are designing for is 12 feet wide, we need to find, in the floor joist span table, a joist size and centering that can span 12' or wider. Reading the table, you'll see that 2 X 8s installed 16" apart on center can span 12'4". So our house would look like the picture below (with all floor joists 2" X 8").

There is some criteria the joists must meet according o the 2012 International Residential Building Codes. The joist must have a minimum of 1 1/2″ riding on the wall or beam. If the joists are lapped, then they must be lapped at least 3″. Maximum end notches for 2 x 8, 2 x 10, and 2 x 12 respectively are 1 13/16″, 2 5/16″, and 2 13/16″.
